PSA for Veteran Owned Business Members and Visitors:

Detroit to Host VA Small Business Conference, Hiring Fair
Help for Veterans Who Own Businesses, Seek Jobs
The National Veterans Small Business Conference, the governmentâs premier event for Veteran-owned small businesses, is coming to Detroitâs Cobo Center June 25-29, the Department of Veterans Affairs announced today.
VA also announced that a âVA for Vetsâ Hiring Fair will be held during the conference for Veterans looking for careers in the public and private sectors. The conference is expected to attract thousands of Veterans, business owners and federal employees, and bring an estimated $3 million in direct spending to the city.
âVA is committed to bringing more Veteran-owned businesses into the public-private partnership,â said VA Chief of Staff John Gingrich. âIn addition to the National Veterans Small Business Conference, our Detroit Hiring Fair will provide Veterans with on-the-spot job opportunities and interviews, while also offering career search classes and one-on-one counseling.â
Last yearâs National Veteran Small Business Conference and Expo in New Orleans drew almost 5,000 attendees, and more than 6,000 participants are expected this year.
The Detroit Hiring Fair builds upon VAâs success Jan. 18 in Washington at which a partnership of federal agencies and private industry attracted over 4,100 Veterans and resulted in over 2,600 on-the-spot interviews and more than 500 tentative job offers.
âThese events are part of Secretary Shinsekiâs ongoing efforts to help Veterans find employment in both the public and private sectors,â said Gingrich. âAs the President said in yesterdayâs State of the Union address, Veterans are crucial to our economy, and we need to find them jobs.â
This yearâs conference will include an open house that gives Veterans the chance to learn the wide range of resources available to help them with their own businesses. Also available will be the VetGovPartner online platform, which enables networking, viewing the business profiles of all participants, and identifying business opportunities with more than 400 government procurement decision makers in attendance.
Known historically as the worldâs capital for the transportation industry, the Detroit metro area is reinventing itself with six booming industries: medical research, defense, entertainment, green tech, urban farming, and aeronautics. About 330,000 Veterans are served by the cityâs VA medical center, and more than 704,000 Veterans live in Michigan.
VA invites all interested persons and businesses to attend. More information is available at www.nationalveteransconference.com. Registration for the conference begins Friday, January 27.

On December 13, U.S. Representatives Yvette D. Clarke, Edolphus Towns, Carolyn Maloney, Jerrold Nadler, Michael Grimm, Bob Turner, Gregory Meeks, Nydia Velåzquez and Peter King, hosted a forum providing veteran-owned small businesses the resources they need to bolster their enterprises. Special guests include the American Legion and the United Veterans War Council, Inc. Panelists represented at the forum included the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs; Small Business Association (SBA); Department of Defense; The U.S. Department of Treasury; The American Legion; NYS Small Business Development Center; Academia; and the financial sector.
Rep. Clarke spoke to the important role veteran-owned small business play in turning our economy around stating, âAs a Member of the House Small Business Committee, I understand that small businesses are the economic engines of our country. It is time that we protect and bolster our veteran âowned small businesses,â she continued, âUnfortunately, our veterans are coming home to a job crisis. For this reason, it was an honor to host this forum with my colleagues, for veterans who want to start or grow a small business in New York City with the intent to hire veterans and create jobs through entrepreneurship, ushering the United States into a new age of prosperity.â
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the percentage of unemployed veterans was 7.4% in November 2011, far above the national average, and as more soldiers return from duty, these percentages could very well increase as veterans struggle to find employment in a languid job market. Furthermore, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that 8.2% of working veterans are self-employed in 2010; a statistic reinforcing the absolute necessity of supporting veteran-owned small businesses as a mechanism for job growth.
Members of the New York City delegation expressed their committement to ensuring that our veteran-owned small businesses have the resources they need to prosper in New York City, as well as across the nation.
âHonoring our veterans requires more than just lip service â it means providing economic opportunities. By helping veterans become entrepreneurs, we empower them to support themselves and their families,â stated Rep. Nydia M. VelĂĄzquez (D-NY), the Ranking Democrat of the House Small Business Committee.
âOur veterans risk everything to fight for our nationâs security and it is incumbent upon both the government and our communities to ensure that they are successful when they return to civilian life,â said Congressman Jerry Nadler (D-NY). âBy helping veterans grow small businesses, we not only help the American economy but also get the opportunity to thank those who have fought and sacrificed for their country.â
âMilitary service is the highest expression of patriotism,â stated U.S. Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY). âAs with all Americans, I am thankful for the commitment and daily sacrifices our military makes to protect our country and defend our democracy.  As members of Congress, we have a duty to address the needs of our men and women in uniform. In part because of their training and experience in the military, in part because of their energy, ideas, and enthusiasm â and with a little help from the rest of us — veterans can be very successful small business owners and entrepreneurs. Todayâs event will help equip them with many of the essential tools necessary to start or expand a business.â
âOur military members and veterans are truly the best of America. As we emerge from the Great Recession, all too many veterans are having a difficult time finding jobs or expanding their businesses â despite the skills and high degree of professionalism that former members of our military bring to the workplace. I thank my colleague and good friend Congresswoman Clarke for organizing todayâs forum and for her leadership in helping todayâs veterans become tomorrowâs entrepreneurs,â said Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY).
âIt is unconscionable that veterans, who were willing to give the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, are not afforded the very best in economic opportunities the greatest country in the world has to offer. America must provide access to entrepreneurship for those veterans who are willing to seek it. We have the resources. It is our responsibility as lawmakers to ensure every veteranâs dream to become a small business owner, a reality,â stated Congressman Edolphus Towns (D-NY).
Congresswoman Clarke was fervent in expressing her desire to support veterans stating, â… let us continue to honor the soldiers who risked their lives for us. Just as the military pledges to leave no soldier behind on the battlefield, we must not leave any veterans behind when they come home. Know that I and my colleagues hosting today, will continue to honor our veterans by supporting legislation that provides them with the benefits they deserve.”

Attention Veteran Owned Business Members and Visitors:
The Women Veterans Business Center (WVBC) celebrated its 1st Anniversary on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at The Palm Center in Houston. The WVBC, a non-profit organization, was founded in 2010 by Army Veteran and businesswoman Marylyn Harris to educate and empower women veterans and military families to start and grow veteran owned businesses.
The anniversary fundraiser event, included training for business owners, a youth entrepreneur challenge, an expo, a keynote speaker, and the recognition of local woman veteran owned businesses.
The Women Veterans Business Center presented the 2011 Woman Veteran Business of the Year Award to Ms. Linda Dailey. Ms Dailey, an Air Force Veteran, is the owner of Health Initiatives Learning Center (HILC) and the Founder of Restoration Ministries in Galveston. HILC is a school that trains and entry-level Healthcare and Technology professionals and Restoration Ministries is a shelter for homeless woman. âMs. Dailey embodies the resilient spirit of Women Veterans.â says Marylyn Harris, Army Veteran and Founder of the Women Veterans Business Center. âHer strong faith and commitment to employing women and improving communities is contagious.â
The 2011 Veteran Friendly Company of the Year Award was presented to Dignity Memorial Funeral Services. Donese Greene, Sales Manager, accepted for Dignity. âDignity believes that every Veteran should have a dignified burial,â she said.
Air Force Veteran and business owner, Jean Craig, was the event’s keynote speaker. Mrs Craig, a Nurse during the Korean War, wowed the audience with her military stories and useful âlessons learnedâ from her successful Mesquite Wood business. Event attendees received âtop notchâ training from Houston SBA Deputy Director, Mark Winchester, Houston SCORE President, Beth Shapiro and a Bankers/Lenders panel that included representatives from Chase Bank, Peoplefund, Houston Business Development, Inc and 4P Enterprises, a veteran owned firm. Representatives from the Houston VA Hospital , Office of Acquisitions were onsite, along with representatives from the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC), Harris County Veterans Services, the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Depelchin Veterans Program and Riverside General Hospital PTSD Program for Veterans.
The anniversary event provided entrepreneurship training for the entire military family. In the Boardroom, the WVBC’s Military Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge took place. Military youth (with Youth Coaches from Windsor Village Church Christian Millionaires in the Making Ministry), competed in teams and presented strategies to grow a local business. After the competition, Mr Willie âSkyyâ Foreman, a former Harlem Globetrotter and owner of Swirlls Yogurt in Spring Branchâs CityCentre, remarked, âI want to hire the Military Youth Teams to train my staff on the strategies they presented today.â Foreman was among a panel of judges tasked with choosing the best strategies that would increase his customer base and annual revenue.
The anniversary attendees enjoyed an EXPO after the training and awards ceremony concluded. Woman veteran owned businesses and community vendors convened on the exhibit floor to showcase their products and services. The EXPO was co-sponsored by Goodwill Industries (Houston) Homeless Women Veterans Program and included free massages from Massage Envy, free makeovers by Modern Makeup Society, and WVBC Signature PINK CAMP Cupcakes by Organic Sweete Shoppe. The Newcomers and Neighbors of Greater Houston (NNGH) provided the âWe Support Women Veteransâ banners and donated business suits for homeless women veterans going to interview for jobs or to business meetings.
Houston is home to over 200,000 Veterans and home to over 30,000 Women Veterans. The Women Veterans Business Center serves as a conduit, connecting women veteran- owned businesses (Suppliers) to industry, government and the non-profit sector. WVBC services include: Event Planning (Outreach / Networking Events), Business Training and Business Coaching.
For more information on the Women Veterans Business Center, contact the WVBC at (713) 230â8926, on FACEBOOK or LINKEDIN, or via email at Director@WomenVeteransBusinessCenter.org.
