Attention Veteran Owned Business Members and Visitors:
Collaboration with Milicruit Increases Job Opportunities for Veterans
WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) today announced a partnership with Milicruit.com to sponsor a nationwide, virtual online job fair on Nov. 10, from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. EST.
“As we work to help Veterans find good paying jobs, it is important that we take advantage of online resources that connect our Veterans with employers around the Nation who want to hire these highly qualified and experienced men and women,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki.
To date, more than 60 military-friendly national employers from both the private and federal sectors and more than 36,000 Veterans have registered to participate in the all day online event.
Veterans can pre-register at http://www.veteranscareerfair.com for this event. On the day of the event, Veterans can log in and visit employer booths, view job openings, apply for jobs, watch employer videos and presentations, chat live with recruiters, and complete on-the-spot video interviews.
They can also interact with VetSuccess counselors to learn more about VA benefits, as well as additional resources and tools for transitioning Servicemembers and family members regarding training, employment, and independent living.
VA’s VetSuccess.gov website offers services by providing access to a job board of more than 8 million job openings, as well as tools for Veterans to build or upload resumes and for employers to search for Veterans who match their recruiting needs.
“Using technology allows us to connect excellent Veteran job seeke
rs with businesses in need of the leadership, discipline, skills, and training that Veterans bring to the workplace,” said Under Secretary for Benefits Allison A. Hickey.
The job fair not only connects employers with Veterans who are a match for their staffing needs, but also allows Veterans to visit the VA’s virtual help desk to obtain information about VA benefits.
Benefits include the Post-9/11 GI Bill and the VA Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment VetSuccess program, which provides job training and placement skills for transitioning Servicemembers and Veterans.
For more information on the job fair go to http://www.va.gov and click on VA’s Facebook site or go to http://www.vetsuccess.gov.
Veterans filing claims may file online through eBenefits, a joint project between the Department of Defense and VA, at https://www.ebenefits.va.gov/ebenefits-portal/ebenefits.portal. They can check the status of their claim with a Premium account, and use a growing number of online services.
Veterans may enroll in eBenefits and obtain a Premium account in-person or online depending on their status. Information on how to register is available on the eBenefits Registration web page at https://www.ebenefits.va.gov/ebenefits-portal/ebenefits.portal?_nfpb=true&_portlet.async=false&_pageLabel=RegistrationOverview.

National Veterans Day Program To Give Away 36,000 Canes
Free of Charge to Those Who Served
Small Georgia Based Company Honors U.S. Military Veterans
U.S. Military Veterans will be honored this Veterans Day in a national program in which 36,000 state of the art folding canes will be given free of charge to Veterans in need of mobility assistance. “Hugo Salutes Our Veterans” will give out Hugo® Folding Canes to U.S. Military Veterans at all U.S. Sam’s Club locations nationwide from November 9, 2011 through Veterans Day, November 11, 2011. Sam’s Club Membership is not required. Proof of U.S. military service may be required to be eligible.
Hugo Salutes Our Veterans is a patriotic annual tradition launched by AMG Medical Inc., an Alpharetta, Georgia headquartered company. AMG Medical started the program in 2007, giving out 5,000 canes to honor the parents and relatives of the company’s employees who served in the U.S. military. Hugo Salutes grew to 25,000 canes in 2009 and 36,000 canes in 2010. This year, with the backing of Hugo, Sam’s Club, Os-Cal, Tums, MegaRed, Move Free, Aleve, Zantac 150, Neosporin, Band-Aid, Gas-X, Centrum Men’s and Centrum Women’s, Hugo Salutes Our Veterans will again give out 36,000 Hugo Folding Canes over three days, November 9, 10 and 11, 2011, while supplies last. Each Sam’s Club location will have 60 Hugo Folding Canes to give out and they will be available on a first-come basis. To find a Sam’s Club near you, visit SamsClub.com.
The Hugo Folding Cane that will be given out retails for $29.99 and is a beautiful patriotic blue. Its ergonomic soft-grip handle provides superior comfort, is appropriate for both left and right hand users and includes a wrist strap for extra confidence. Sturdy, functional and stylish, the Hugo Folding Cane has multiple settings to accommodate people between 5’ and 6’3” in height. The cane automatically
unfolds and locks into place for use. To store, the cane conveniently folds into four sections.
Philip delBuey, Global President of AMG Medical Inc., said, “For all of us at AMG Medical, Hugo Salutes Our Veterans is a way to express our deepest appreciation to all Veterans for their selfless contributions to our country. Our company’s mission is all about helping people stay active and connected to family, friends and their community. With this year’s program, we will have given out more than 100,000 canes. We hope that many Veterans will benefit from Hugo Salutes this year.”
“The Department of Veterans Affairs is grateful for the generosity of citizens and businesses that honor the service and sacrifice of Veterans and their families. Actions such as those of Hugo Folding Cane, which has been involved in this effort for a number of years, are appreciated by VA because they support VA’s mission to honor our Nation’s promises to America’s heroes,” said Josh Taylor, Press Secretary for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

VeteranOwnedBusiness.com is proud to welcome Disabled Veterans Committee on Housing of Winchester, Virginia (Frederick County VA) to the Veteran Owned Business Directory Non Profit Section.
Disabled Veterans Committee on Housing Details: I am John S. Lewandowski; President/CEO of the Disabled Veterans Committee on Housing, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, also I am 100% disabled veteran with loss of use of lower extremities due to a service connected injury. I like many of you when confronted with my injury didn’t know where to turn and it became almost impossible for me to get around my home, so I had to turn to outside help in this matter. Boy, little did I know how expenses and how time consuming it became; it took over 3 years just to get a contractor that didn’t want to take an arm and a leg for their work. Here is the list of categories that the Veterans Administration will provide grant assistance to our veterans.
The categories are as follows:
- Debilitating injury such as loss of or loss of use of lower extremities,
- Loss of or loss of use of upper extremities (paraplegic and quadriplegic),
- Loss of or loss of use of one upper & lower extremities,
- Severe burns over greater than 70% of their bodies,
- Blindness,
- TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury),
- ALS and many more…
I said that there should be an easier way for us veterans to eliminate all this hassle, so I started an agency that can setup a “One Stop Shop” called Disabled Veterans Committee on Housing. Our Board of Director’s is made up of Disabled veterans like ourselves and we have made the work of getting your home either remodeled or a newly accessible and affordable home built to your specifications.
