Columbus Ohio Councilmember Craig Supports Veteran Owned Businesses

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

Attention Columbus Ohio Veteran Business Owners:

(Columbus, Ohio) It has been a little more than a month since announcing the creation of the Veterans Affairs Committee for Columbus City Council and already the chair of the committee, Councilmember Hearcel F. Craig, is proposing a significant change to the Columbus City Code that will assist veteran-owned businesses compete for city contracts.  Craig, a Vietnam era U.S. Army veteran himself, says the legislation will add veteran-owned businesses to those enterprises certified and tracked by the Equal Business Opportunity Commission Office (EBOCO).

The change, announced at the annual Veteran’s Stand Down event held at Veteran’s Memorial, will allow those businesses to better compete for city contracts in the same manner as minority or female owned businesses currently participate in the bid process.   The change also provides veteran-owned businesses with bid counseling and start-up assistance from EBOCO.

“By increasing our services for veteran-owned businesses, the City of Columbus once again is demonstrating its commitment to helping those who protected the very freedoms we enjoy as Americans,” said Craig.   “This is a business friendly initiative that will help position these firms to expand their opportunities to do work for the city.”

Craig has also committed to exploring the feasibility of awarding credits against cost for bids submitted by certified veteran-owned businesses.  This policy would mirror existing credits for local workforce and local businesses.

Columbus City Council recently passed ordinance 1325-2011, legislation that extends for another year military leave with pay to City employees currently serving on active duty, including the health and life insurance benefits for their family members.  City Council also supports the Mayor’s Veterans Advisory Committee and takes part in numerous activities thought the year supporting our servicemen and women.

New Orleans Selected as 2011 National Veterans Small Business Conference Location

National Veterans Small Business Conference Selects New Orleans as 2011 Venue

WASHINGTON — Thousands of small business owners, Veterans, military personnel and federal employees will attend the federal government’s premier national event for Veteran-owned small business in New Orleans in August 2011.

Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki, “It allows us to draw attention to a region that is successfully recovering from one of the worst natural disasters in our country’s history.”

The seventh annual National Veterans Small Business Conference and Exposition will be held in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center August 15-18, 2011, Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) officials announced today.

In 2011, VA replaces the U.S. Army as the principal conference sponsor.  The Army established the event, previously held in Las Vegas, with the goal of providing Veteran business owners with important information about federal Veterans programs, business development strategies, and Veteran-Owned Small Business (VOSB) and Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) legislation.  Attendance has grown about 32 percent a year since its inception.  In 2010, more than 3,300 people attended, well beyond the 2,600 expected.  Half of the attendees at the 2010 conference were Veterans who owned small businesses. Other attendees included Veterans contemplating opening their own businesses and firms that wanted to do business with Veteran business owners.

New Orleans offers hotel accommodations ranging from luxury suites to inexpensive rooms for budget-conscious small-business owners, with accommodations for attendees who are disabled.

The Morial Convention Center will welcome Veterans with a recently completed $90 million restoration that began late in 2006.  The facility is one of the most technologically advanced convention centers in the United States.  Selection of the site will offer an economic boost to a region devastated by Hurricane Katrina and this summer’s Gulf Oil spill – both considerations factored into the VA Secretary’s decision to move the conference to New Orleans.

Scheduled to speak at the 2011 conference are Secretary Shinseki and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu.  There will be Veterans Affairs services and benefits information kiosks available through the exposition. VA invites all interested persons and businesses to attend. Visit www.va.gov/osdbuz and check back frequently for new details.

2008 VeteranOwnedBusiness.com Overview

Just In Time For The New Year…
2008 VeteranOwnedBusiness.com Overview

Well it’s been a long year! We’ve seen a ton of activity internally and of course the country’s seen a ton of activity from all angles. The new year is only a few days away. I for one am looking forward to many things in 2009 including a new administration to lead the country (hopefully in a much different direction) and a new outlook on the economy. I really don’t see how we can do much worse.

On a great note: we officially released VeteranOwnedBusiness.com on Veteran’s Day 2008 (read our PR on the release of VeteranOwnedBusiness.com). It’s been a little over a month and we have already crossed the 500 mark for business listings. We have several thousand pre-registered listings (signed up before VeteranOwnedBusiness.com went live). We have been contacting these businesses to resubmit their information. It’s been a slow process but day-by-day things are increasing.

Here is a list of some of the important pieces we’ve been able to implement in 2008:
1) Addition of over 500 veteran owned businesses
2) Set up of site-wide sponsor program
3) Dozens of enhanced listings
4) Site linked to by numerous veterans organizations, blogs, sites and government agencies
5) Set up of nearly 1,000 categories
6) Nearly 1,000 pages linked into Google, 750 in Yahoo and over 2,500 in MSN/Live
7) The addition of a “Why The Military Helped Me Become A Better Business Owner” quote area that runs throughout the site.
8) The addition of over 100 business quotes for the aforementioned quote area
9) Did our first trade show, though it was really small and only a local event, but a trade show no less

As you can see, 2008 was a very productive year, especially if you take into consideration the site didn’t go live (well it’s still technically in Beta) until 11/11/2008. 2009 promises to be a spectacular year. Here is a short list of some of the many changes and additions we anticipate making in 2009 (most by the 1st quarter):

1) Have over 2,500 veteran owned businesses listed (End of Q1 2009)
2) Have at least 2 corporate sponsors
3) The addition of states to the directory (to search purely by state instead of categories) (now live)
4) 2,500 links to VeteranOwnedBusiness.com from other sites, organizations and directories
5) Creation of a starter package for businesses to include certificates and more
6) Printing and distribution of t-shirts, posters, and, most importantly, stickers and magnets for cars so consumers and fellow veterans can show their support
7) 20 articles written about VeteranOwnedBusiness.com and/or articles VeteranOwnedBusiness.com is referenced in
8) Creation of a Blog on VeteranOwnedBusiness.com in order to keep interested parties updated on the goings on of the directory (now live)
9) Get to 50,000 unique monthly visitors (End of Q1 2009)
10) Establish and run first web-based newsletter for VOBs and SDVOBs
11) Establish and run first web-based newsletter for site supporters and visitors
12) 5,000 links in from Google; 5,000 in from Yahoo and 5,000 in from MSN/Live respectively
13) Add a testimonial section for businesses that have bought from or plan to buy from VOBs and SDVOBs
14) Set up a lead generation form where visitors can send an email directly from the VeteranOwnedBusiness.com directory to a business listed
15) Admin panel for listed businesses working in order for each to access and edit their respective listings (End of Q2 2009)
16) 250 banner ads by sponsors running (End of Q1 2009)
17) Officially release from Beta into a fully functioning directory (End of Q1 2009)
18) Create comments section for business owners to give quotes on how their respective military experience made each a better business owner (Now Live)
19) Ability to search for Veteran Owned Businesses by county
20) Ability to search for Veteran Owned Businesses by city
21) Ability to do a geographic search by keyword within a certain radius of a zip code.
22) Blow out release party (End of Q1 2009)

This is a very aggressive plan to try and get many features added and working properly by the end of the first quarter of 2009. Soon (hopefully) we’ll have a blog working directly on VeteranOwnedBusiness.com. When we do, I will begin to make posts directly there.

I hope and wish you all great success in 2009. Now more than ever is a time for fellow Americans to hope and pray for a better future. It’s also imperative that we all search out and conduct business with other American owned businesses… or… as we have been working on: United States Military Vetearn Owned Businesses and Service Disabled Veteran Owned Businesses.

Cheers and salutations in ’09!

A Directory of Businesses Owned by U.S. Veterans

VeteranOwnedBusiness.com Released into Beta

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

New directory of Veteran Owned and Service Disabled Veteran Owned businesses to provide comprehensive product and service search capabilities for agencies, contractors and consumers

Proud to be a veteran owned business

Proud to be a veteran owned business

November 11, 2008 (Veteran’s Day) – Veterans who own and operate businesses now have a new, comprehensive online resource to help grow their respective businesses: VeteranOwnedBusiness.com.

VeteranOwnedBusiness.com is a new, user friendly directory of businesses owned by veterans and service disabled veterans released into Beta on Veteran’s Day 2008.

Though in Beta, VeteranOwnedBusiness.com has already received nearly 2,500 pre-registered listings from veteran owned businesses throughout the United States looking to be added.  While there is a four step listing process, there is absolutely no cost for veterans who want to get their businesses listed.  Veterans simply need to visit: http://www.VeteranOwnedBusiness.com and click on the “sign up now” button to submit their listing.  Once a listing has been submitted, a staff member will review the information for accuracy and to ensure the business is in fact owned by a United States military veteran.  Once approved, the listing will be immediately added to the directory, making it searchable by site visitors.

“VeteranOwnedBusiness.com was created as a way to help veterans who run their own businesses increase their global exposure to fellow veterans, government personnel and contractors as well as consumers who want to show their support for veterans,” said Brian K. St.Ours, VeteranOwnedBusiness.com’s Founder and President.  Mr. St.Ours added, “We are creating an all-inclusive site that allows visitors a user friendly way to search for product and service offerings that are unique in the fact that they are all made by, sold by or serviced by veterans!”

Site visitors are asked to bare in mind that the site has just been released and will undergo thorough updating and enhancements over the next several weeks in order to populate the database and add enhanced functionality.
