National POW/MIA Recognition Day
Friday, September 16, 2011

The President issues a proclamation commemorating the observances and reminding the nation of those Americans who have sacrificed so much for their country.
Observances of National POW/MIA Recognition Day are held across the country on military installations, ships at sea, state capitols, schools and veterans’ facilities. It is traditionally observed on the third Friday in September each year. This observance is one of six days throughout the year that Congress has mandated the flying of the National League of Families’ POW/MIA flag. The others are Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day.
The flag is to be flown at major military installations, national cemeteries, all post offices, VA medical facilities, the World War II Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the official offices of the secretaries of state, defense and veterans affairs, the director of the selective service system and the White House.
A Pentagon ceremony for National POW/MIA Recognition Day was held on Friday, Sept.18, 2009. This ceremony featured troops from each of the military services.

Attention San Diego County Businesses Owned by Military Veterans:
Save Money & Recycle Your Fluorescent Lights Free of Charge!!!
San Diego Department of Environmental Health has teamed up with Veteran Owned Business to bring a huge savings to San Diego County Veteran Owned Businesses!
Small Businesses: Save Money & Recycle Your Fluorescent Lights Free of Charge!!! If you own a small business, the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health wants to save you money by helping you recycle your fluorescent lights free of charge! To qualify for this opportunity, businesses must be located in San Diego County.
California State law requires everyone must recycle florescent lights, which can cost small businesses hundreds of dollars a year. Thanks to an Energy Efficiency & Conservation Block Grant from The US Department of Energy, The San Diego County of Environmental Health is currently able to offer a limited time opportunity to properly recycle lamps at no cost.
To participate, simply fax or mail your request form (available at: www.sdhhw.org under “universal waste”). Once your request is processed, you will receive a pre-postage paid kits that can be filled and shipped directly to a recycler for proper management.
Businesses can acquire a maximum of four (4) kits that will accommodate up to 200 bulbs (depending on size and type) while supplies last. This program is anticipated to run through June 2012.
Remember: Disposal of Fluorescent lamps (tubes and bulbs) to the trash is prohibited in California
Fluorescent lamps must be managed as Universal Waste and properly recycled according to Section 66273.33 of Title 22, California Code of Regulations. Fluorescent lamps contain small amounts of toxic metal mercury so do your part and recycle!

June 27th is PTSD Awareness Day

June 27th is PTSD Awareness Day. The VA’s National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is working to increase PTSD awareness. The United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers this list ten ways you can help those suffering with PTSD:
Ten ways community members can help:
- Understand that anyone can experience trauma, such as accidents, assault, war, or disasters.
- Think broadly. When trauma happens, the survivor’s family, friends, coworkers, and community are affected.
- Learn about common reactions to trauma and readjustment to life outside a war zone.
- Be aware of where get help for trauma survivors, Veterans, and people with PTSD.
- Expand your understanding of how PTSD is identified and treated.
- Know that treatment for PTSD works.
- Ask a Veteran or trauma survivor if talking would help, but do not push if someone is not ready to discuss things.
- Realize that stigma is a barrier to getting treatment. Getting people to talk or seek help is not always easy. Your encouragement matters.
- Know the facts. More than half of US adults will experience trauma in their lifetime. About 7% of adults will deal with PTSD at some point. For Veterans and male and female sexual assault survivors, the figure is higher.
- Connect with self-help resources, apps, and videos about PTSD.
Stay informed about PTSD through the VA’s PTSD Monthly Update.
This is a public service announcement (PSA) brought to you by Veteran Owned Business.  To learn more about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), ways to identify those who may be suffering from PTSD and the various options available to those who may be suffering from PTSD, please visit the VA’s National Center for PTSD at: http://www.ptsd.va.gov. You can also call the PTSD Information Line at (802) 296-6300.
Here is a list of PTSD Resources including organizations and departments who are all working together to create awareness of PTSD and find effective treatments that can help.
If you are in crisis, please call 911, go to your nearest Emergency Room, or call 1-800-273-8255 (TALK)(Spanish/Español 1-888-628-9454). NOTE: Veterans, press “1″ after you call — or Veterans can chat live with a crisis counselor at any time of day or night.
