Supports Veteran-Owned Businesses; Helps Compete for Federal Contracts

WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs will host the upcoming National Veterans Small Business Conference and Expo, Aug.15-18 in New Orleans.  It will be the largest nationwide conference of its kind focused on helping Veteran-owned businesses succeed in winning federal contracts.

“Veteran-owned businesses provide world class services and expand employment opportunities for some of our Nation’s most highly-trained and motivated men and women,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. “That is why VA is proud to host this annual conference to help better prepare these veteran-owned businesses to compete and win contracts with the federal government.”

The conference, scheduled for the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, will provide Veteran-Owned and Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned small businesses of all sizes with an opportunity to learn, network, and market their businesses.

The conference will offer a variety of new training sessions on navigating the federal acquisition process, including finance, compliance, business development, marketing, strategy, contract management, human resources, technology, and program management.   The conference track sessions will be targeted for a variety of businesses from new business owners just back from theater to well-established Veteran-owned businesses looking to expand opportunities or increase market share.

An open house has been added to the event to give Veterans from both the conference and local region the opportunity to experience the wide range of resources available to the Veteran community.

The National Veteran Small Business Conference is open to both government and non-government personnel.  For more information and to register for the conference, go to www.nationalveteransconference.com.

New Jersey Veteran Owned Business Set-Aside Program Clears NJ Senate… Heads To The Governor’s Desk

BEACH LEGISLATION CALLING FOR VETERAN OWNED BUSINESS SET-ASIDE CLEARS NJ SENATE

EDA Contracting Agencies Would Set Aside 3% of Contracts To Veteran Owned Businesses

TRENTON (January 6, 2011) – Legislation sponsored by Senator Jim Beach (D-Camden) that would require the New Jersey Economic Development Authority to administer a veteran-owned business set-aside program was cleared today by the full Senate.

“Our veterans have sacrificed so much for the safety and well being of this country and they deserve recognition and assistance from those that enlist their services,” said Senator Beach, Chairman of the Senate Military and Veterans Affairs Committee. “Setting aside a percentage of contracts for veteran owned businesses is just one small way we can repay the debt we owe to them. Not only is it the right thing to do, but, given the current economic climate and the need to spur the economy, it is the necessary thing to do.”

The bill, S-2314, also sponsored by Senator Christopher Connors, would establish a goal that contracting agencies set aside at least three percent of their contracts for veteran-owned businesses. A “veteran-owned business” would be defined as a business which has its principal place of business in the State; is independently owned and operated; and at least 51% of the business is owned and controlled by persons who are veterans.

The bill would require each contracting agency to submit an annual report to the Economic Development Authority about the types of businesses receiving set-aside awards as well as the number of contracts. The Economic Development Authority would provide oversight of the program.

The legislation now heads to the Governor’s desk.

VeteranOwnedBusiness.com received the following message recently from Gia Kornet, Casting Associate Producer for Embassy Row Productions.   Please read the following email and contact Gia directly if you have any questions and/or for more information.

“I work for Embassy Row Productions (Who Wants To Be A Millionaire) we are currently casting a new series for TV Land and would like to have a veteran on the show.

The show works by nominating a deserving individual with the most fun and memorable day ever. We work closely with family and the business owner to set up a day full of surprises and celebrity encounters.

Seeing that the is a surprise I was hoping to get the word out to veteran owned businesses who could benefit from TV coverage of their company. If they have another veteran working for them they could nominate that person. If the person is cast then we would want to shoot in the company location.

At this time we are only casting in New York & New Jersey and are looking to nominate a veteran between the ages of 30-50.

See below for information and feel free to post or email members about the show.

My company is working on a new series for TV LAND called “Make My Day.”  It’s a fun, new show with humorous scenarios and great surprises. The show works by having people like you nominate a family member/friend/co-worker/employee who deserves an amazing and memorable day.

Here is blurb about the show:

Do you know someone you’d like to surprise with the best day of their life?  Then nominate them and they’ll be the star of their own show for a day!

Here is who we’re looking for:

Must be 30 to 50 years of age
Lives with someone over the age of 18
Resides in New York or New Jersey
Has great reactions and an upbeat, friendly, outgoing personality
Generally follows a structured routine through out the week
Does not work for a business chain of any kind, preferably a privately owned, smaller business

If you know someone who you think would be perfect for this please email:

GMK@EMBASSYROW.COM OR CALL GIA AT 646.386.9098

PLEASE ATTACH A PHOTO OF THE PERSON YOU’RE NOMINATING AND TELL US ALL ABOUT THEM!!!

AND REMEMBER…IT’S ALL A SURPRISE, SO DON’T LET THEM KNOW YOU’VE NOMINATED THEM!

And please feel free to pass this email onto your friends and co-workers, etc.

Thank you!!!
