Detroit to Host 2012 Veterans Small Business Conference and Hiring Fair for Veterans | Veteran Owned Business PSA

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

PSA for Veteran Owned Business Members and Visitors:

Detroit to Host VA Small Business Conference, Hiring Fair
Help for Veterans Who Own Businesses, Seek Jobs

The National Veterans Small Business Conference, the government’s premier event for Veteran-owned small businesses, is coming to Detroit’s Cobo Center June 25-29, the Department of Veterans Affairs announced today.

VA also announced that a “VA for Vets” Hiring Fair will be held during the conference for Veterans looking for careers in the public and private sectors. The conference is expected to attract thousands of Veterans, business owners and federal employees, and bring an estimated $3 million in direct spending to the city.

“VA is committed to bringing more Veteran-owned businesses into the public-private partnership,” said VA Chief of Staff John Gingrich. “In addition to the National Veterans Small Business Conference, our Detroit Hiring Fair will provide Veterans with on-the-spot job opportunities and interviews, while also offering career search classes and one-on-one counseling.”

Last year’s National Veteran Small Business Conference and Expo in New Orleans drew almost 5,000 attendees, and more than 6,000 participants are expected this year.

The Detroit Hiring Fair builds upon VA’s success Jan. 18 in Washington at which a partnership of federal agencies and private industry attracted over 4,100 Veterans and resulted in over 2,600 on-the-spot interviews and more than 500 tentative job offers.

“These events are part of Secretary Shinseki’s ongoing efforts to help Veterans find employment in both the public and private sectors,” said Gingrich. “As the President said in yesterday’s State of the Union address, Veterans are crucial to our economy, and we need to find them jobs.”

This year’s conference will include an open house that gives Veterans the chance to learn the wide range of resources available to help them with their own businesses.  Also available will be the VetGovPartner online platform, which enables networking, viewing the business profiles of all participants, and identifying business opportunities with more than 400 government procurement decision makers in attendance.

Known historically as the world’s capital for the transportation industry, the Detroit metro area is reinventing itself with six booming industries: medical research, defense, entertainment, green tech, urban farming, and aeronautics.  About 330,000 Veterans are served by the city’s VA medical center, and more than 704,000 Veterans live in Michigan.

VA invites all interested persons and businesses to attend.  More information is available at www.nationalveteransconference.com. Registration for the conference begins Friday, January 27.

Wish Upon A Hero Foundation Ready to Distribute More Than $500,000 to Active Duty and Veteran Families In Need

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

Attention Veteran Owned Business Members and Visitors:

WISH UPON A HERO FOUNDATION READY TO DISTRIBUTE MORE THAN $500,000 TO ACTIVE DUTY AND VETERAN FAMILIES IN NEED

Broadcast PSA Available to Encourage Military Families to Post a â€Wish’ For Help

Moorestown, NJ (November 9, 2011) –With the veterans unemployment rate at an all-time high of 12.4%, the Wish Upon a Hero Foundation (www.wishuponaherofoundation.org, WUAHF) is launching a national campaign on Veterans Day to give away more than $500,000 to assist active duty and veteran families in need.    Public service announcements on TV stations nationwide (http://screen.2mg.com/movies/WUAH/PSA_PostWishesR.2.wmv) will encourage families to post wishes on Wish Upon a Hero (www.wishuponahero.com), the online giving platform where anyone can post a wish and anyone can grant a wish.

WUAHF’s recent Hike For Our Heroes campaign, led by Iraq War veteran Troy Yocum, raised more than $500,000 via Yocum’s 18-month, 7,800-mile journey across America.  Through the generosity of thousands of Americans, with support from Modell’s Sporting Goods and other retailers across the country, WUAHF is ready to grant wishes to ease the burden for military families who need assistance with medical, educational and everyday living expenses.

“This is such a critical time in our country.  With more troops returning from Iraq and discouraging employment prospects, we need to rally behind these brave men and women in every way possible,” says Wish Upon a Hero Founder Dave Girgenti.

WUAHF was recently selected by Chase Community Giving as one of five charities to be honored at Chase’s American Giving Awards in December.

The Wish Upon a Hero Foundation is a non-profit organization that grants the wishes of those in need.  In 2011, WUAHF partnered with Hike for Our Heroes to raise funds and awareness and grant the wishes of military families in need.   The Foundation and Wish Upon a Hero.com were founded by Girgenti following the catastrophic events of September 11th and Hurricane Katrina. Communities and individuals helped each other during those difficult times.  Girgenti created a platform where anyone can post a wish, and everyone can be a hero.  For more information, go to www.wishuponaherofoundation.org.

SBA Helps Veterans Start, Grow and Expand Small Businesses

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

Attention Veteran Business Owners:

WASHINGTON, Nov. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — Entrepreneurship Boot Camp for Disabled Veterans Expands to Eighth School

With thousands of service men and women returning from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the U.S. Small Business Administration is welcoming them home with programs and initiatives to help them start, grow and expand their businesses.

“Around Veterans Day, our thoughts turn to the men and women who are serving or have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as to all who have made sacrifices and served our country in the armed forces,” SBA Administrator Karen Mills said. “When you consider the leadership and management skills our veterans develop while on active and reserve duty, it’s no wonder we see so many of them choose a path as entrepreneurs and small business owners.”

SBA provides veterans access to much needed business counseling and training, capital and business development opportunities through government contracts.

Those products and programs include:

Entrepreneurial Development

SBA and Syracuse University are expanding the successful Entrepreneurship Boot Camp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) program to an eighth school, Cornell University. The growing partnership between SBA and Syracuse University, now in its third year, provides training on how they can start and grow a small business with programs targeted to service-disabled veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan and their family caregivers, women veterans, and National Guard and Reserve members and their families.

The “boot camp” was created and delivered by a network of some of the best business schools in the country. Last year, the first year SBA partnered with Syracuse University, 129 service-disabled veterans participated in the program.

Since the program’s inception, more than 320 wounded warriors have graduated and more than 150 businesses have been launched by graduates. Participating schools include: Syracuse University, University of Connecticut, UCLA, Florida State University, Texas A&M University, Purdue University, Louisiana State University, and Cornell University.

SBA is also providing $2.6 million through a cooperative agreement over three years for two new programs supporting veteran entrepreneurs.

The first, Women Veterans Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship (V-WISE), focuses on training, networking and mentorship for women veterans. The three-day, off-site training program, online training and network support structures are delivered in several locations around the nation, and anticipates serving up to 1,400 female veterans over a 36-month period.

The second, Operation Endure & Grow, targets National Guard and Reserve Component members, their families and partners. The goal of this program is to mitigate the small business economic hardship of deployed members and their families. The eight-week online course focuses on the fundamentals of launching and/or growing a small business for those who will sustain the business when the service member is deployed, injured or killed. Initially, 550 individuals are expected to participate. Together, V-WISE and Operation Endure & Grow are expected to serve over 1,950 individuals and their families over three years.

Access to Capital

SBA had a near record year lending to veteran-owned small businesses in fiscal year 2011. SBA lending to veterans in fiscal year 2011 amounted to more than 4,300 loans totaling $1.5 billion in its flagship 7(a) and 504 programs. Since 2007, SBA’s Patriot Express loan pilot initiative alone has guaranteed loans of more than $667 million to nearly 8,100 veterans, reservists and their spouses to establish or expand their small businesses. The initiative, extended through 2013, provided more than 1,560 loans totaling $142 million in fiscal year 2011. Patriot Express is offered by SBA’s network of participating lenders nationwide and features one of SBA’s fastest turnaround times for loan approvals.

Government Contracting

SBA worked with both contracting officers and veteran-owned small businesses to deliver the highest-ever percentage of federal contracts to service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses in FY2010, totaling $10.4 billion. Also, through parity legislation, SBA reestablished a level playing field for service-disabled veteran-owned businesses that compete with other small businesses for set-aside contracts.

The Office of Veteran’s Business Development provided Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business procurement training to more than 3,000 SDVOSB’s in 2011 to help achieve the 3 percent SDVOSB goal. The SBA is expanding its outreach to service-disabled veterans with an online contracting tutorial to help veterans and military spouses who own small businesses identify and take advantage of federal contracting opportunities.

Task Force Report

SBA chairs the Interagency Task Force on Veterans Small Business Development focused on improving and expanding opportunities for veteran business owners. The Task Force recently issued its first Report to the President and included 18 recommendations to increase access to capital, improve business development opportunities, and meet federal contracting goals for veteran-owned small businesses and service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses. You can read the whole report here.

SBA reaches out to veterans through its 68 SBA district offices, 15 Veterans Business Outreach Centers nationwide, more than 1,000 Small Business Development Centers, 110 Women’s Business Centers and some 12,000 SCORE volunteers. SBA also has numerous programs creating government contracting opportunities for veteran-owned small businesses. For more information, visit www.sba.gov/vets and www.sba.gov/reservists .

To participate, simply fax or mail your request form (available at: www.sdhhw.org under “universal waste”). Once your request is processed, you will receive a pre-postage paid kits that can be filled and shipped directly to a recycler for proper management.

Businesses can acquire a maximum of four (4) kits that will accommodate up to 200 bulbs (depending on size and type) while supplies last. This program is anticipated to run through June 2012.

Remember: Disposal of Fluorescent lamps (tubes and bulbs) to the trash is prohibited in California

Fluorescent lamps must be managed as Universal Waste and properly recycled according to Section 66273.33 of Title 22, California Code of Regulations. Fluorescent lamps contain small amounts of toxic metal mercury so do your part and recycle!

New Jersey Veteran Owned Business Set-Aside Program Clears NJ Senate… Heads To The Governor’s Desk

Friday, January 7th, 2011

BEACH LEGISLATION CALLING FOR VETERAN OWNED BUSINESS SET-ASIDE CLEARS NJ SENATE

EDA Contracting Agencies Would Set Aside 3% of Contracts To Veteran Owned Businesses

TRENTON (January 6, 2011) – Legislation sponsored by Senator Jim Beach (D-Camden) that would require the New Jersey Economic Development Authority to administer a veteran-owned business set-aside program was cleared today by the full Senate.

“Our veterans have sacrificed so much for the safety and well being of this country and they deserve recognition and assistance from those that enlist their services,” said Senator Beach, Chairman of the Senate Military and Veterans Affairs Committee. “Setting aside a percentage of contracts for veteran owned businesses is just one small way we can repay the debt we owe to them. Not only is it the right thing to do, but, given the current economic climate and the need to spur the economy, it is the necessary thing to do.”

The bill, S-2314, also sponsored by Senator Christopher Connors, would establish a goal that contracting agencies set aside at least three percent of their contracts for veteran-owned businesses. A “veteran-owned business” would be defined as a business which has its principal place of business in the State; is independently owned and operated; and at least 51% of the business is owned and controlled by persons who are veterans.

The bill would require each contracting agency to submit an annual report to the Economic Development Authority about the types of businesses receiving set-aside awards as well as the number of contracts. The Economic Development Authority would provide oversight of the program.

The legislation now heads to the Governor’s desk.

New Orleans Selected as 2011 National Veterans Small Business Conference Location

National Veterans Small Business Conference Selects New Orleans as 2011 Venue

WASHINGTON — Thousands of small business owners, Veterans, military personnel and federal employees will attend the federal government’s premier national event for Veteran-owned small business in New Orleans in August 2011.

Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki, “It allows us to draw attention to a region that is successfully recovering from one of the worst natural disasters in our country’s history.”

The seventh annual National Veterans Small Business Conference and Exposition will be held in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center August 15-18, 2011, Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) officials announced today.

In 2011, VA replaces the U.S. Army as the principal conference sponsor.  The Army established the event, previously held in Las Vegas, with the goal of providing Veteran business owners with important information about federal Veterans programs, business development strategies, and Veteran-Owned Small Business (VOSB) and Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) legislation.  Attendance has grown about 32 percent a year since its inception.  In 2010, more than 3,300 people attended, well beyond the 2,600 expected.  Half of the attendees at the 2010 conference were Veterans who owned small businesses. Other attendees included Veterans contemplating opening their own businesses and firms that wanted to do business with Veteran business owners.

New Orleans offers hotel accommodations ranging from luxury suites to inexpensive rooms for budget-conscious small-business owners, with accommodations for attendees who are disabled.

The Morial Convention Center will welcome Veterans with a recently completed $90 million restoration that began late in 2006.  The facility is one of the most technologically advanced convention centers in the United States.  Selection of the site will offer an economic boost to a region devastated by Hurricane Katrina and this summer’s Gulf Oil spill – both considerations factored into the VA Secretary’s decision to move the conference to New Orleans.

Scheduled to speak at the 2011 conference are Secretary Shinseki and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu.  There will be Veterans Affairs services and benefits information kiosks available through the exposition. VA invites all interested persons and businesses to attend. Visit www.va.gov/osdbuz and check back frequently for new details.
