VA Set to Verify Veteran Small Businesses
(article: VA Set to Verify Veteran Small Businesses)

WASHINGTON–(January 3, 2011)–To further advocate for Veterans, VA announced that companies identifying themselves as small businesses or Veteran-owned businesses to gain priority for some Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) contracts must now provide documentation verifying their status within 90 days of receiving notice from the agency.
“VA is committed to doing business with as well as supporting and protecting Veteran-owned small businesses,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. “Although the verification process may initially be a challenge to some small business owners and to VA, it’s a necessary step to eliminate misrepresentation by firms trying to receive contracts that should go to service-disabled and other Veteran-owned vendors.”
The Veterans Benefits Act of 2010, signed by the President Oct. 13, expanded VA’s requirement to verify the status of businesses claiming Veterans preference to compete for VA contracts by being listed in VA’s VetBiz.gov “Vendor Information Pages” (VIP) database. Companies will have to submit an application to substantiate their status as owned and controlled by Veterans, service-disabled Veterans or eligible surviving spouses. Only companies that submit the information will be listed in the VIP database.
The law requires VA to notify currently listed businesses that within 90 days of the Veteran-owned business receiving the notice they must submit certain business documents. VA sent notices to more than 13,000 listed businesses by email and mail Dec. 10-11. Other companies, wanting to be listed in the database and considered for future set-aside VA contracts, also have to submit application packages. VA will work on those verifications after the existing listings are verified.
The department plans to post additional information at www.VetBiz.gov in early February informing applicants how to submit their documents electronically. In the meantime, VA’s notice to currently listed businesses encourages them to submit their information on CD-ROM.
Priority processing will be given to those Veteran-owned firms that are in line to receive a set-aside contract from VA, those that already conduct business with VA, and those that have already filed an application for verification.
For more information, visit the Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization’s website at www.va.gov/OSDBU/veteran/verification.asp or the main page at www.va.gov/osdbu/.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Starts Mentoring Program for Veteran-Owned Small Businesses (VOSB)
(article: VA Starts Mentoring for Veteran-Owned Small Businesses)
(source: Department of Veterans Affairs – Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization)
Washington (December 22, 2010) - To help small businesses owned by service-disabled Veterans and other Veteran-owned small businesses become more competitive in the marketplace, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has selected 20 mentor-protégé teams to participate in a new program.
“For VA, it’s a natural goal to award government contracts to qualified Veteran-owned small businesses,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. “Not only does it benefit the Veteran entrepreneur, but VA gets the contractor support it needs more quickly and with less risk. All Veterans win by getting better services from VA.”
The program commits participating firms to agreements of up to 36 months in which mentoring firms provide business assistance in various skill areas and foster long-term business relationships with their Veteran-owned protégé firms. The mentor and protégé firms will prepare their own agreements.
VA selected the teams based on its assessment of small businesses owned by Veterans and the ability of potential mentoring firms to offer help with development.
Small-business specialists in VA’s Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization reviewed the agreements formed by the participants. The mentoring firms are not necessarily Veteran-owned. Their mentoring can benefit the protégé firms if VA evaluates them in bidding for future contracts or subcontracts.
VA said it plans to select five more pairs of mentor and protégé firms next month. VA will select additional mentor-protégé teams next August and approximately every six months thereafter.
More information on the new program can be found at http://www.va.gov/osdbu.

National Veterans Small Business Conference Selects New Orleans as 2011 Venue
WASHINGTON — Thousands of small business owners, Veterans, military personnel and federal employees will attend the federal government’s premier national event for Veteran-owned small business in New Orleans in August 2011.
Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki, “It allows us to draw attention to a region that is successfully recovering from one of the worst natural disasters in our country’s history.”
The seventh annual National Veterans Small Business Conference and Exposition will be held in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center August 15-18, 2011, Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) officials announced today.
In 2011, VA replaces the U.S. Army as the principal conference sponsor. The Army established the event, previously held in Las Vegas, with the goal of providing Veteran business owners with important information about federal Veterans programs, business development strategies, and Veteran-Owned Small Business (VOSB) and Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) legislation. Attendance has grown about 32 percent a year since its inception. In 2010, more than 3,300 people attended, well beyond the 2,600 expected. Half of the attendees at the 2010 conference were Veterans who owned small businesses. Other attendees included Veterans contemplating opening their own businesses and firms that wanted to do business with Veteran business owners.
New Orleans offers hotel accommodations ranging from luxury suites to inexpensive rooms for budget-conscious small-business owners, with accommodations for attendees who are disabled.
The Morial Convention Center will welcome Veterans with a recently completed $90 million restoration that began late in 2006. The facility is one of the most technologically advanced convention centers in the United States. Selection of the site will offer an economic boost to a region devastated by Hurricane Katrina and this summer’s Gulf Oil spill – both considerations factored into the VA Secretary’s decision to move the conference to New Orleans.
Scheduled to speak at the 2011 conference are Secretary Shinseki and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu. There will be Veterans Affairs services and benefits information kiosks available through the exposition. VA invites all interested persons and businesses to attend. Visit www.va.gov/osdbuz and check back frequently for new details.

We are very proud to state that VeteranOwnedBusiness.com has now surpassed 4,000 business profiles. Since going live on Veteran’s Day 2008, VeteranOwnedBusiness.com has now added and approved over 4,000 businesses owned by veterans, active duty military, reservists and service disabled veterans of the United States Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy, National Guard and Coast Guard.
True from the very first day we launched VeteranOwnedBusiness.com… there is still absolutely no cost to list a business and there is absolutely no cost to search for a business! We have received numerous phone calls (some days more than 200 calls in a day) and thousands of emails of praise from proud Americans from all over the world
thanking us and letting us know they’ve used VeteranOwnedBusiness.com to find a business. We’ve also received a ton of calls and emails from businesses listed letting us know how much they appreciate their membership and how their free listing has helped them bring in business–and for many–help keep their doors open during these very trying economic times.
Other notable achievements:
- Nearly 7 million (7,000,000) pages viewed since going live on Veteran’s Day 2008
- Nearly 6 hundred thousand (600,000) visitors since going live
- Have nearly 200 profiles of non profits who directly help veterans, active duty military and their respective families
- Have received several testimonials (some on company letterhead) from members who told us their business profile has brought in at least one customer/client.
Our entire staff continues to work hard to further the development of VeteranOwnedBusiness.com. We have many new features and functionalities planned for release in the 2nd half of 2010. One of our biggest goals is to continue to grow our veteran owned business directory by reaching our goal of 5,000 businesses profiled by the end of 2010. Having added over 500 new, free members in a little over a month puts us far ahead of this goal of reaching 5,000 by year’s end.
We know we have miles to go as far as having some of the development work done; however, our goal all along has been to create a comprehensive, user friendly place for procurement people, prime contractors, fellow veteran owned businesses and of course the every day consumer to go to easily find and conduct business with businesses owned by our country’s military heroes! Because this number has grown so rapidly, we have actually had to spend more time on the sign up area than other areas. Please be patient as we continue to work toward an even more comprehensive directory.
Please be sure to help us spread the word about VeteranOwnedBusiness.com by sharing it with everyone you know. You can simply email the link or you can visit our badge page and download a banner or badge for use on your site. There’s no other way to ask this so we come right out and say, “WE NEED YOUR HELP!”
VeteranOwnedBusiness.com is in the running for a grant in Pepsi’s Refresh Everything April 2010 project. We are asking for your help. We would really appreciate it if you would take a few minutes and register for Pepsi’s Refresh Everything project and then take time to vote for VeteranOwnedBusiness.com. We are hoping to get funding to help with several development projects that are necessary for us to reach our next major milestone of 10,000 business profiles (currently at 4,000).
The link to VeteranOwnedBusiness.com can be found here: http://www.refresheverything.com/veteranownedbusiness. First time visitors need to sign
up first (just a few questions). The grant program is actually a daily voting process. If you’ve got the time, please visit the site each day and vote for VeteranOwnedBusiness.com: http://www.refresheverything.com/veteranownedbusiness. I added a daily reminder in my calendar to vote each morning.
I’d also appreciate it if you would please pass this on to others you know who are veterans, family members of veterans or other Americans who proudly support our country’s military heroes (which should be every American). Any additional support we can get will be greatly appreciated as we are already a bit behind (the voting started on 4/1/2010 at 12:01am). In addition to letting others know about this program, you can also mention something about it in your blog and/or alert those in your social network about it (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.).
Lastly, if you are a veteran, active duty military or reservist and own a business, by all means sign up for your business’ free profile (look for the red “sign up” button) by visiting http://www.VeteranOwnedBusiness.com.
