Some Vets Get Chance at Medical Retirement

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

According to Military.com, Approximately 70,000 veterans who were given a medical separation between September 11, 2001 and December 31, 2009 have the chance to have their separations reviewed and possibly changed to a medical retirement. To be eligible veterans must have been medically separated with a combined disability rating of 20 percent or less, and originally not found eligible for retirement.

Physical Disability Board of Review

Service members who have been medically separated since September 11, 2001 will have the opportunity to have their disability ratings reviewed to ensure fairness and accuracy.

The new Physical Disability Board of Review (PDBR) will examine each applicant’s medical separation, compare DoD and VA ratings, and make a recommendation to the respective Service Secretary (or designee.) A disability rating cannot be lowered and any change to the rating is effective on the date of final decision by the Service Secretary.

To be eligible for PDBR review, a service member must have been medically separated between September 11, 2001 and December 31, 2009 with a combined disability rating of 20 percent or less, and not found eligible for retirement.

There are significant differences between this new PDBR review and a Board for Correction of Military (or Naval) Record (BCMR/BCNR) review. These differences are outlined here and are also in the instructions accompanying the application (form DD-294).

While the Air Force is the lead for the PDBR process, case tracking and reporting, a joint service board will conduct the evaluation and review of each case. Applicants will not be able to appear in person, but may include any statements, briefs, medical records or other supporting documents with their application. After the document review is completed and a final decision is made, each applicant will be notified of the decision and any further information regarding a change of rating.

A final version of the application (form DD-294) was approved on January 9, 2009 and is available at http://www.dtic.mil/whs/directives/infomgt/forms/formsprogram.htm (under “DoD Forms Inventory 0001-0499″). Applications are now being accepted.

Please refer to the FAQ document for more information about the Physical Disability Board of Review.

You may contact the PDBR intake unit at the following address:

SAF/MRBR
550 C Street West
Suite 41
Randolph AFB, Texas 78150-4743

Please keep in mind that their office cannot discuss the merits of your application. You may wish to contact your local veterans’ service organization for advice or guidance.

The DoD Instruction on the PDBR process is available here:http://www.dtic.mil/whs/directives/corres/pdf/604044p.pdf.

3,500 Veteran Owned Businesses Strong and Growing

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

VeteranOwnedBusiness.com Directory WebsiteWe are very proud to state that VeteranOwnedBusiness.com has now surpassed 3,500 business profiles.  Since going live on Veteran’s Day 2008, VeteranOwnedBusiness.com has now added and approved over 3,500 businesses owned by veterans, active duty military, reservists and service disabled veterans of the United States Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy, National Guard and Coast Guard.

True from the very first day we launched VeteranOwnedBusiness.com… there is still absolutely no cost to list a business and there is absolutely no cost to search for a business!  We have received numerous phone calls (some days more than 100 calls in a day) and thousands of emails of praise from proud Americans from all over the world Veteran Owned Business Directory Logothanking us and letting us know they’ve used VeteranOwnedBusiness.com to find a business.  We’ve also received a ton of calls and emails from businesses listed letting us know how much they appreciate their membership and how their free listing has helped them bring in business–and for many–help keep their doors open during these very trying economic times.

Other notable achievements:

  • Nearly 6 million (6,000,000) pages viewed since going live on Veteran’s Day 2008
  • Over half a million (500,000) visitors since going live
  • Have nearly 200 profiles of non profits who directly help veterans, active duty military and their respective families

Our entire staff continues to work hard (practically around the clock) to further the development of VeteranOwnedBusiness.com.  We have many new features and functionalities planned for release in 2010.  One of our biggest goals is to continue to grow our veteran owned business directory by reaching our goal of 5,000 businesses profiled by the end of 2010.  We know we have miles to go as far as having some of the development work done; however, our goal all along has been to create a comprehensive, user friendly place for procurement people, prime contractors, fellow veteran owned businesses and of course the every day consumer to go to easily find and conduct business with businesses owned by our country’s military heroes!  Because this number has grown so rapidly, we have actually had to spend more time on the sign up area than other areas.  Please be patient as we continue to work toward an even more comprehensive directory.

Please be sure to help us spread the word about VeteranOwnedBusiness.com by sharing it with everyone you know. You can simply email the link or you can visit our badge page and download a banner or badge for use on your site.

Thank You!
