Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta Delivers Message to Veterans on 11-11-11
Veterans Day is the day the American people set aside for honoring those, past and present, who’ve served our nation in uniform.
Since our nation’s founding, American service members have stepped forward to safeguard liberty for future generations. And during the ten years since 9/11, another generation has answered this call to fight and sacrifice on foreign soil. They have done all that was asked of them and more. And as a result, on this Veterans Day, we are closer to prevailing in today’s fights.
In Iraq, we are ending our combat presence this year, and Iraqis are now prepared to govern and defend their own country, which will act as a force for stability in a vital region of the world. In Afghanistan, our men and women are turning back an insurgency and building up Afghan security forces to prevent that country from ever again serving as a sanctuary for al Qaeda or its affiliates to threaten our homeland. In Libya, our forces supported a NATO operation that protected the Libyan people from a brutal dictator, who will never again be able to threaten his citizens or undermine international security. And on terrorism, we have significantly weakened Al Qaeda and its allies, decimated their leadership, and kept American safer.
This progress would not be possible without the service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform, and also of the families who love and support them. I’m delighted that President Obama designated November as Military Family Month, encouraging Americans to do more to recognize and support these great patriots.
This country owes a profound debt to all Veterans, and military families. In these tough economic times, we’re especially cognizant of our service members transitioning to civilian life, as well as our military spouses. And we must give them the best possible tools to succeed in professional pursuits. This week, I had the opportunity to meet with business leaders and press them to do just that – so that we ensure our Veterans will continue to positively impact our country’s future prosperity.
For serving our nation with such bravery and distinction, our Veterans and current service members deserve our country’s profound gratitude – not just on Veteran’s Day, but every day.
Thank you, and may God bless all Americans serving around the world in uniform.
Supports Veteran-Owned Businesses; Helps Compete for Federal Contracts
WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs will host the upcoming National Veterans Small Business Conference and Expo, Aug.15-18 in New Orleans.  It will be the largest nationwide conference of its kind focused on helping Veteran-owned businesses succeed in winning federal contracts.
“Veteran-owned businesses provide world class services and expand employment opportunities for some of our Nation’s most highly-trained and motivated men and women,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. “That is why VA is proud to host this annual conference to help better prepare these veteran-owned businesses to compete and win contracts with the federal government.”
The conference, scheduled for the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, will provide Veteran-Owned and Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned small businesses of all sizes with an opportunity to learn, network, and market their businesses.
The conference will offer a variety of new training sessions on navigating the federal acquisition process, including finance, compliance, business development, marketing, strategy, contract management, human resources, technology, and program management.   The conference track sessions will be targeted for a variety of businesses from new business owners just back from theater to well-established Veteran-owned businesses looking to expand opportunities or increase market share.
An open house has been added to the event to give Veterans from both the conference and local region the opportunity to experience the wide range of resources available to the Veteran community.
The National Veteran Small Business Conference is open to both government and non-government personnel.  For more information and to register for the conference, go to www.nationalveteransconference.com.

We are very proud to state that VeteranOwnedBusiness.com has now surpassed 4,000 business profiles. Since going live on Veteran’s Day 2008, VeteranOwnedBusiness.com has now added and approved over 4,000 businesses owned by veterans, active duty military, reservists and service disabled veterans of the United States Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy, National Guard and Coast Guard.
True from the very first day we launched VeteranOwnedBusiness.com… there is still absolutely no cost to list a business and there is absolutely no cost to search for a business! We have received numerous phone calls (some days more than 200 calls in a day) and thousands of emails of praise from proud Americans from all over the world thanking us and letting us know they’ve used VeteranOwnedBusiness.com to find a business. We’ve also received a ton of calls and emails from businesses listed letting us know how much they appreciate their membership and how their free listing has helped them bring in business–and for many–help keep their doors open during these very trying economic times.
Other notable achievements:
Nearly 7 million (7,000,000) pages viewed since going live on Veteran’s Day 2008
Nearly 6 hundred thousand (600,000) visitors since going live
Have nearly 200 profiles of non profits who directly help veterans, active duty military and their respective families
Have received several testimonials (some on company letterhead) from members who told us their business profile has brought in at least one customer/client.
Our entire staff continues to work hard to further the development of VeteranOwnedBusiness.com. We have many new features and functionalities planned for release in the 2nd half of 2010. One of our biggest goals is to continue to grow our veteran owned business directory by reaching our goal of 5,000 businesses profiled by the end of 2010.  Having added over 500 new, free members in a little over a month puts us far ahead of this goal of reaching 5,000 by year’s end.
We know we have miles to go as far as having some of the development work done; however, our goal all along has been to create a comprehensive, user friendly place for procurement people, prime contractors, fellow veteran owned businesses and of course the every day consumer to go to easily find and conduct business with businesses owned by our country’s military heroes! Because this number has grown so rapidly, we have actually had to spend more time on the sign up area than other areas. Please be patient as we continue to work toward an even more comprehensive directory.
We are very proud to state that VeteranOwnedBusiness.com has now surpassed 3,500 business profiles. Since going live on Veteran’s Day 2008, VeteranOwnedBusiness.com has now added and approved over 3,500 businesses owned by veterans, active duty military, reservists and service disabled veterans of the United States Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy, National Guard and Coast Guard.
