I quit high school my junior year and joined the AF. Unlike civilian life, the AF gave me opportunities based on my abilities; instead of (to me) a worthless piece of paper. In less than 8 months I graduated from an advanced school that required 5 years of line experience and NCO rank. I had just turned 18 and was an E3.

I was able to apply this directly, first to learning a business, and then to teaching my employees about their jobs. I also learned in the military that success generally required a team effort and that every member of that team was equally valuable.
