Iraq Combat Veteran Josiah Guthland Named Director of The Bob Parsons Veterans Center
Josiah Guthland, a combat veteran of the Second Persian Gulf War in Iraq and a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal with Valor and a Purple Heart, and currently an admissions officer at Carroll Community College, has been named director of The Bob Parsons Veterans Center at The University of Baltimore. Guthland, who serves as CCC’s dedicated veteran advisor as the assistant director of admissions, will start in his new role at UB on Nov. 30.
Guthland’s military career, which began in 2003 and continued through 2009, is highlighted by his time as a combat engineer squad leader with the U.S. Army during a 16-month combat tour in Mosul, Iraq. During that tour, he received a Bronze Star for gallantry in action against the enemy, going above and beyond the call of duty. He was wounded and received a Purple Heart. Guthland’s first tour of duty, in Baquba, Iraq, had him serving as a driver and heavy equipment operator.
In his role as the Parsons Center director, Guthland will be tasked with providing a strategic direction for the center, coordinating activities and services that support veterans and active military students to enroll, achieve success and move to complete their degrees at UB. He will work alongside colleagues from a variety of student-facing offices, as well as the Office of Administration and Finance and the academic leadership, to support UB’s military-affiliated student recruitment strategy; guide students who receive veteran or military educational benefits; and cultivate community and alumni relationships to enhance veteran and military student career and job prospects.
“I am excited that I will be able to combine my passion for working with veteran and military-affiliated students with my education and experience in higher education to support this very special student population at the University of Baltimore,” Guthland said. “With support for these students from both in and outside of the University of Baltimore, together we can ensure their current and future success.”
Founded in 2013 through the generosity of Bob Parsons, B.S. ’75, D.H.L. ’08, a Baltimore native, Marine Corps Vietnam War veteran, and founder of global website creator Go Daddy, The Bob Parsons Veterans Center serves hundreds of veteran or active-duty individuals enrolled at the University, including National Guard, Reserves, and Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard soldiers. Undergraduates and graduates, as well as students from the UB School of Law, are affiliated with the center. The Bob and Renee Parsons Foundation supports the center, as well as The Bob Parsons Veterans Advocacy Clinic and The Bob Parsons Scholarship.
Beginning in 2014, Guthland served as assistant director of admissions at Carroll Community College. As an advisor to veteran and military students, he worked one on one with new and prospective students and their families to ensure a successful onboarding into a successful college career.
Prior to that, Guthland was a recruiter for Aerotek, identifying health care professionals in Howard, Anne Arundel, Prince George’s and Baltimore counties as well as Baltimore City for large medical practices across the region.
From 2011 to 2013, he was an admissions assistant at CCC, serving in a variety of recruitment roles.
Guthland earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from McDaniel College in 2013. He is a candidate for a master’s degree in higher education administration from Messiah University.
